4 Reasons to Consider an Engagement Shoot

Over the years as a wedding photographer, I’ve regularly had couples tell me that they’re camera shy, unphotogenic or nervous about being photographed. It’s totally understandable if you feel this way too, as professional photography is often a new experience, and when it comes to photos, we are usually our own worst critic.

As part of my approach, I always aim to put my couples at ease by getting to know them and offering gentle direction to ensure their shoot is relaxed, beautiful and fun. An engagement session is a brilliant opportunity to put any nerves to rest and capture those milestone moments ahead of the big day.

With that in mind, here are four reasons you may want to consider an engagement shoot...

  1. Let’s get to know each other!

Whether you choose a relaxing coastal walk, a stroll through the woods or a city location, an engagement session offers us the chance to catch up on your wedding plans, enjoy an hour of each other’s company and essentially get to know each other better ahead of your big day – all while I’m snapping away! For me, establishing a strong connection with my couples is a huge part of my approach as a photographer. I want to connect with you both and build on the trust, so that I can effortlessly capture your love story in the most authentic way possible. We can work out which poses, angles and shots you feel most comfortable with, so that when your wedding day swings around, it’ll be like we’ve been lifelong friends!

2. Practice in front of the camera

Often nerves come from not knowing what to expect, so an engagement shoot can be the perfect way to practice. You’ll get an idea of how I work, and similarly to on your wedding day, I’ll be unobtrusive as you both chat and laugh away together as soon-to-be newlyweds. Sometimes the best shots are the ones where you’re lost in the moment, reminiscing about a memory, and having a good laugh together. Your engagement shoot will act as a warm-up to the wedding day, when you’ll forget that you ever felt nervous being photographed.

3. Capture the memories

Engagement shoots aren’t just for those who feel nervous in front of the camera. Getting engaged is super exciting and deserves to be celebrated! An engagement session is a lovely opportunity to document this time in your relationship and you’ll be able to look back and remember every step of your journey to saying ‘I Do’. As a fine art wedding photographer in the UK, I’m lucky enough to capture engagement shoots in some of the South West’s most iconic and scenic settings. Why not opt for somewhere that’s extra special to you both, such as the location of your first date, where your other half proposed or a place where you’ve adored going together as a couple.

4. Share the love

While you can share your engagement photos on social media, it may also be a lovely idea to include them in your wedding day. From your save the dates and wedding website, to the cover of a guest book or simply as part of your decor, your wedding celebration is the perfect way to showcase your engagement pictures! I truly believe in the beauty of printing photos, and they can be a wonderful memento for your home or to gift to loved ones too.

Nothing beats being able to capture couples who are wildly in love, and I’m already gearing up for the next wedding season!
