5 Reasons to Have an Unplugged Wedding Ceremony

As a wedding photographer, I’m privileged to experience a lot of beautiful wedding ceremonies. It really is one of my favourite parts of the day as you exchange vows, wedding rings and make that forever promise. I’ve noticed that the option to ‘unplug’ is popular among a lot of my couples, where they’re encouraging their guests to swap social media and phones for the opportunity to really be present. If you’re wondering what going ‘unplugged’ is, it’s a total digital detox for the duration of your wedding ceremony: no technology, no social media tags and no watching your day unfold behind a screen.

I’ve put together a quick guide on reasons why you might like to consider unplugging for your wedding ceremony...

  1. Experience the moment presently

You’ve gathered all of your favourite people together in one place to celebrate the same thing, and that isn’t the latest social media trend! You’ve spent months (or even years) putting your heart and soul into planning your forever moment, and so understandably you’ll want your guests to be there to savour every second with you. The ceremony is the most significant moment of the day, so it can be lovely to encourage your guests to pop away their devices and experience it wholeheartedly with you.

2. You’ll want to see your guests faces

As you make your way down the aisle, it’s so much more meaningful to see the beaming smiles, the happy tears and emotions on your guests faces, rather that being presented with an army of phones snapping away. Swap out technology for truly authentic moments that you and your loved ones can cherish far longer than any social media post will last!

3. Avoid any distractions

Technology can be super distracting in everyday life, and it doesn’t stop on your wedding day. No one wants to hear a WhatsApp ping as you’re saying your vows! Not only does it distract you as a couple, but it will distract the guests who have decided to be present for your ceremony. Have your registrar ask your guests to switch off all devices, or include a sign at the entrance to your ceremony so your guests know to go unplugged.

4. Trust your photographer to get the shots

You’ve invested emotionally and financially in your photographer, so let us do all the hard work for you! As a fine art wedding photographer, I’ll capture that first kiss as a married couple, the fleeting moment when your family member wipes away a tear or the sincere exchanging of looks between your best friends. However, nothing ruins a beautiful image more than having an iPhone in it!

5. Make it intimate

Being in the moment and having an unplugged wedding ceremony instantly adds to the magic and intimacy of your wedding day. Your guests have the chance to fully immerse themselves in your celebration, without distraction from the outside world, so they can really enjoy what they’ve been invited to. Nothing will be more than special than looking out to your guests who have come to witness this moment and soaking up their real-time reaction. It’s guaranteed to be something that you’ll never forget.

My photography style is romantic, candid, and soulful, and an unplugged ceremony really does beautifully align with this. Nothing makes me happier than capturing authentic and genuine photography of your love story! Get in touch to find out more about my approach and availability.
