5 Ways to Feel Prepared for Rain on Your Wedding Day

Lots of couples dream of having a gorgeous sunny wedding day, and with good reason as it’s wonderful to enjoy a beautiful outdoor setting with your family and friends. There are certain months where dry weather is more likely, but unfortunately in the UK the weather can be unpredictable no matter the time of year!

Although the weather isn’t something we can control, it is something we can plan for. As a wedding photographer, I’ve experienced all kinds of weather situations at weddings, so I’ve put together my top tips to help you feel prepared for wet weather on your wedding day…

  1. Venue locations

When searching for your wedding venue, it’s good to keep in mind all the different locations that they offer. Although you may have your heart set on a beautiful outdoor garden ceremony in the sunshine, make sure you’re just as happy with their indoor options should you need to use that instead. If you love the indoor spaces just as much as outdoors, then you’ll avoid disappointed on the day.

2. Discuss wet weather with your photographer

As a wedding photographer I’ll always have a backup location in mind should we need to do formal and couple photos indoors or under cover. Where possible I’ll take you outside between rain showers to make the most of beautiful scenery and natural lighting, but if this isn’t possible, then I’ll be able to guide you seamlessly into an alternative.

Make sure to bring up wet weather with your photographer in advance and they’ll reassure you of the plans they have in place. It can be useful to arrange an on-site visit with them too if they are unfamiliar with your venue.

3. Be flexible with timings

Although you may have planned to do those formal photos 20 minutes into the drink’s reception, your photographer may ask you to do them a little sooner or later depending on the weather. Sometimes couple portraits may also be moved from the drink’s reception to after your meal if it looks drier later in the day. Focus on enjoying your time with your guests and trust your suppliers to guide you, they will have done this many times before.

4. Clear umbrellas

I always arrive prepared with lots of clear umbrellas on the wedding day! If it’s lightly raining, a clear umbrella can look lovely in photos and allows you to still get those dreamy outdoor couple portraits. It can also be a good idea to stock up on clear umbrellas if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, but the weather looks uncertain in the lead up. This way your guests can stay dry and comfortable should there be any risk of drizzle.

5. Embrace it

I’ve often found that the happiest newlyweds are those who embrace the day for exactly what it is! If possible, try to avoid pinning your hopes on the weather when it’s totally out of your control. Your photographer will achieve beautiful wedding photos whatever the weather and your guests will be over the moon to witness you getting married. It will be perfect just the way it is.

I hope these top tips help you feel more prepared for the chance of rain on your wedding day. If you’re planning your wedding in the UK, get in touch to find out more about my approach and availability. I’d love to hear from you!
